May Queen Fact Sheet 2024

Definition
May Queen is our annual spring fundraising festival in which Sundre High School students, parents, and staff volunteer to work at odd jobs over several days to raise money for extracurricular programs and events in the school. This tradition began with a small group of students in 1969 as a fundraiser for their Prom, and has only gotten bigger over the years. Although we have raised in excess of $35,000 in past years, May Queen is more than just a fundraiser. It is a school community activity that:

● Promotes cooperation and collaboration among students.
● Empowers students to take leadership roles.
● Provides valuable lessons in the areas of community, persistence, initiative, and responsibility.
● Brings students, parents, staff, and community together.

Timeline
May Queen 2024 runs on May 8-11. Students will begin to arrange jobs and fill in agreements on April 12, 2024.

Hours
Wednesday (May 8) 3:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Thursday (May 9) 3:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Friday (May 10) 3:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Saturday (May 11) 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.

For all four days, students are expected to be back at the school and/or home no more than 30 minutes after the deadline.

Transportation
Students may not drive other students within the town limits or outside of town limits as per CESD #73 Policy 5-06. Students must be transported by parents or by staff. Parents will be asked to volunteer and submit their driving information and copy of insurance ( 2 million liability insurance) to the school. As per Chinook’s Edge Policy 5-06, students are permitted to drive themselves to sites.

Grade Headquarters
Each grade will have their headquarters in a room at the school. At the headquarters will be a list of all the jobs, the students assigned to those jobs, supervisors, and the means of transportation used to get there. Teachers will “man” the phones at all times and will be available to problem solve. We will attempt to have a cell phone at every job site as well.

Operating Machinery
Where machinery is to be used, the employer must be present and must operate the machinery unless another supervisor is qualified to do so. Students should not operate machinery unless it is at their own residence and their parents are present. Machinery would include, but not be limited to, tractors, vehicles, chainsaws, and rototillers.

Monies Raised
The funds raised are allocated to scholarships, extra-curricular activities, graduation, awards night, yearbook, student trips, community projects and other student initiatives.
