Key Points From Friday March 20th SHS Google Meet

Google Meet Norms

  • Mute microphones unless you are speaking.
  • Muting cameras may help to lessen the load on your internet bandwidth.
    • This will help with keeping students focused on the teacher instead of paying attention to each other.

  • Inform all participants that the session is being recorded to be posted on Google Classroom   (if applicable)

  • If a student has a question…
    • They can use the chat section to state “I have a question” at which point the teacher can ask them to unmute their microphone and ask their question.
    • They can ask the questions in the chat and then others can see questions already asked and the teacher can select the order to answer them in.

  • Why are we meeting on Friday, March 20th?
  • To discuss with students what we are planning to move education forward.
  • To familiarize teachers and students with this mode of communicating that is new to most of us.
  • To test to see if the network can handle this.
  • To recommend that students create an efficient workspace at home that will minimize distractions and have everything they need handy.

  • How long are we going to be away from the school?
    • We don’t have any more knowledge than what has been in the news.  The wording from the Government was indefinitely, which could mean any amount of time.  We are planning for the worst, but hoping to be back as soon as possible.

  • What will teaching and learning look like moving forward…
    • Students will only need focus on core classes. Option classes (ie. Shop, Art, TV Arts, Foods, etc.) have been cancelled, with the option to continue some where it is appropriate. Although it is an option course Math 31 will continue.

  • Teachers will use Google Classroom as our main resource for connecting with students to give assignments, lectures, video clips, etc. but will also be available by email.

  • Monday, March 23rd will be the first day of new material on Google Classroom.  Depending on your course and the way it is taught you may get new material each day, or it may be spaced out so you have time to work on it.  Keep checking into Google Classroom everyday for updates.

  • We understand that students will be learning/engaging with school at different times throughout the day. Google Classroom is your main resource for each class and it is expected students are keeping up with new posts/material. If you want direct contact with your teacher please connect with them during their Google Meet “office hours” scheduled daily. You can also email them at any time understanding that it may take them time to respond.

Schedule for Teacher “Office Hours”

In order to allow for student-teacher interaction we are modifying the school schedule (see below).  The following blocks represent each teacher's “office hours”.

Teacher Planning / Lesson Development

Afternoon

  • During this time teachers will be answering questions and connecting with that block’s students.
    • For example,  if you normally had Chemistry 30 in A block, that is when you would have direct access to that teacher to ask questions or join a Google Meet.

  • Lessons will be posted throughout the day and week.

  • Afternoons are set aside for teacher planning and lesson development as well as corresponding with students as needed.

  • Attendance for these block’s is not mandatory but is strongly recommended for students to maintain direct contact with their teacher on a regular basis.

  • How will my final grade be calculated?
    • Assessment (tests, assignments, etc.) of student work is currently being discussed and will be communicated to students at a future time, depending on the class it may look slightly different.

  • ADLC Online Courses
    • Students already enrolled in ALDC online learning courses, please continue completing your work as you normally would.

  • The Importance of a Schedule
    • In order to continue with educating students it is important that students spend a few hours/day working on school work.  Scheduling this in the day will help. Having a quiet area set up with few distractions will also be beneficial in working on school work.

  • Physical and Mental Health While Self-Isolating
    • Physical Health and Mental Health can degrade when we are isolated in our homes.
    • Being active for a portion of the day is very important in keeping healthy both physically and mentally.  Please try to work physical activity into your daily routine.
    • It is important to keep the vital social connection with friends and family when you are in self-isolation.  Please continue to connect with your social network. Google Meet and FaceTime can be used by anyone to be able to connect with their network.

  • School Events
    • All extra-curricular activities are also cancelled until school resumes.

(May Queen, Badminton, Track, Drama, etc.)

  • Graduation Ceremony - if schools are still closed at the end of June we will not be having a Cap & Gown Ceremony at that time.  When school resumes we will look for an appropriate time to have a Cap & Gown Ceremony.

  • Start looking at Google classroom and checking your CESD email regularly...

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Just a reminder that Friday morning at 9:00 AM we are hoping to meet online with as many students as possible using the "Google Hangout Meet" application on your computer, chromebook or mobile device.  If any student is unable to meet that is OK, after the meeting we will be posting on our website what was discussed.

Schools are looking at an entirely new way of doing business.   Teachers have been working very hard at transitioning to a new way of delivering lessons, assignments and feedback. We are hoping that using Google Hangout Meet will work for students to be able to ask questions of their teacher live time via a group video chat.  Friday's initial use of Google Hangout Meet at 9:00AM will serve two purposes, one is to give information to students, the second is to practice using this technology that is unfamiliar to many.

Friday, March 20th - 9:00AM - Google Hangout Meet

To begin this process we would like to try a Google Hangout/Meet with all students, so their A Block teacher can give them the specifics of how we will move forward as a school.

All Grade 12’s and students with no A Block class  will connect with Mr. Saunders and Mr. Beck.  This will also serve as a test of Google Hangout/Meet as a communication tool.

Google Meet can be accessed on a computer/laptop, Chromebook or your mobile device using the “Meet” App.

                   iPhone App: Click Here

Note: We would suggest using either a computer/laptop or Chromebook as the primary device for these purposes.

To access the Google Meet on Friday please visit sundrehigh.ca and click on banner called “Friday, March 20th Google Meets”.  These links will not be open until 8:55AM Friday.

Technology at Home

If your child is unable to connect with their teachers due to not having access to an appropriate piece of technology (chromebook, laptop, tablet, etc.) please contact our vice-principal Tyler Jesse at tjesse@cesd73.ca.

Alternate Learning Plan

Dear Parents / Guardians,

In light of all classes being cancelled in Alberta schools, we would like to move forward with teaching and learning to the best of our abilities with the limitations imposed upon us.  There will be many growing pains through this process so please bare with us. To deliver instruction to students we will be relying heavily on Google Classroom as well as online video connections which most students already use.

Please have your child check their CESD email and their course specific Google Classrooms regularly for more information from each teacher.  At this time we are going to start by focusing on core classes, then look at possibilities for CTS and option classes.

Parents’ Guide to Google Classroom

Teachers will be experimenting with various delivery models while trying to find what works best for their subject area and their specific group of learners.
